So many of our veterans are living in homeless shelters, hungry and in of need medical help. How is this possible? Willing to give their lives for our country, they have fought and sacrificed in unimaginable ways. What can we do to help these hero's get back on their feet? That is the question that Pazzella Colston, a veteran herself, has not only asked but also took action upon so as to make a difference. With her own money, Pazz bought a house to offer forgotten Veterans a place to stay and the help they need. This was the start of Homes for Heroic Veterans.
"What we do at Home for Heroic Veterans is try to get them to a point where they can move on to the next level in their lives. Many of them don't realize there are benefits available to them from the VA. Because many suffer from PTSD and other psychological issues as a result of their service, we help connect them with the professionals that can address those concerns. We also assist them in finding resources for employment. And at the end of a six month period, they receive a voucher to help them get an apartment of their own. So far, through our program, we have successfully helped 10 Veterans and now have 7 more who have recently moved in. Our goal is to acquire more houses and apartment buildings to house homeless veterans in the Metro Detroit area."
